Making effective connections with your business card is really about using your card as the very powerful incredible assistant it is.  The goal is to build a high quality contact list.

Remember you are making effective connections with your business card not collecting the most cards; it is about the connection with the person.  So here are 5 tips on making effective connections with your business cards that will increase the quality of your prospects thus reducing your stack of unwanted business cards.

TIP # 1 – GIVE A CARD GET A CARD

Don’t give a card unless you get one in return.  This is a cardinal rule if you have 500 cards they should equate to 500 names added to your contact list by the time you reorder.  If you are giving a card and the recipient does not have a business card – hand them two of your cards and ask them to write their contact details on the back of one.  Alternatively you can have them give you their details and input the data directly into your phone.

TIP # 2 – MAKE NOTES

On the card you received; always write down some details about the person who gave you the card, based on your conversation with them.  Their family, interests, business etc.  Ask great questions to get the conversation going.  This is a critical component of making effective connections with your business card – making notes; also include where and when you met.  Please, don’t write notes in front of the person.

TIP # 3 – INPUT DATA

As soon as possible; the latest the next day, input all this info into your database (or phone) name, address, phone numbers… and your notes.

TIP #4 – MAKE CONTACT WITHIN 1-2 DAYS

Call or text within 1 day of the meeting (max 2 days) saying “I’m John we met at that business dinner last night; it was nice talking with you.  Maybe we can grab a coffee later this week.”  This is where you are really making effective connections with your business card.  You are now building relationships.

TIP # 5 FOLLOW UP

Text or call and make a solid date to meet up.  When you meet them get to know them even better.  If they have an opportunity listen to their presentation and make sure to show genuine interest in their life and business.  If it is not for you give them a referral of someone in your network who would be a better fit.  Choose the time when you feel it is appropriation to talk about your opportunity.  Even if they are not interested maintain the connection with periodic coffee meetings and gentle mentioning of your opportunity.
